WEL-200: Best Practices for Optimizing the Wireless Edge Sensor Battery Life

WEL-200, wireless edge sensor

At EMX, we’re committed to offering you the best access control solutions for your applications. Part of that commitment means providing you with the information you need to better optimize our products. One of our most popular solutions is our WEL-200, a wireless edge sensor that operates up to 200 feet of line of sight between the transmitter and receiver. The WEL-200 has a long battery life and can operate for two years on two AA lithium batteries. But it’s important that you take steps to optimize the wireless edge sensor battery life.

Here, we’ll learn about the WEL-200 features, as well as best practices you can take for maximizing its battery life.

The WEL-200: A Wireless Edge Sensor Built for Convenience and Functionality

Our wireless edge sensor offers a number of advantages over other models. In addition to its long operating range, it is also compatible with a range of monitored safety edges and is compliant with 2018 UL325 monitoring standards. Our engineers have also integrated a radio signal quality display that allows the user to quickly assess signal strength and ensure a solid connection during installation.

The WEL-200 was built with the customer in mind. Its user interface is labeled, organized and easy to understand, making for a more streamlined installation experience. The receiver can also connect with up to four transmitters and provides separate relay and pulse outputs for open and close edge functionality. It’s extremely durable and is housed in a rugged, watertight NEMA 4X enclosure, making it the perfect choice to withstand various outdoor conditions.

Best Practices for Optimizing the Battery Life of the WEL-200

First, you can easily maximize the performance of your wireless edge sensor by using the right batteries. Our competitors use hard-to-find coin cell batteries, but our solution utilizes low-cost lithium AA batteries. We recommend a high-quality lithium battery, such as those made by Energizer. Ensuring that you’re using the right batteries will go a long way in maximizing battery life.

Next, it’s important to properly position the equipment to optimize performance. Prioritizing line of sight is imperative here. Even though the WEL-200 has a 200-foot operating range, if the receiver cannot see the transmitter, this can result in performance errors, which can drain the battery unnecessarily. An obstructed line of sight can easily be avoided by properly positioning the wireless edge sensor. For instance, avoid mounting the transmitter on the backside of a solid steel gate, with the receiver on the other side where they can’t see each other and communicate.

Similarly, it’s essential to ensure that the antenna isn’t covered. The antenna itself also needs a clear line of sight to operate properly. The WEL-200 contains an internal antenna at the top of the housing, so it can be difficult to accurately pinpoint its location. We’ve added a new warning label to the back of the receiver housing that reminds installers that the antenna should not be covered up during the installation process.

We understand how frustrating it can be when your wireless edge sensor isn’t working as expected, so we’ve created solutions to ensure that your WEL-200’s battery life is working at an optimal performance. We’ve recently redesigned the WEL-200 to make it more user-friendly. This includes a signal strength indicator that helps you monitor connection strength for improved battery life.
